Solar Energy for BTS Telecom towers–Gigantic energy conservation being overlooked

Energy shortage, dependency on fossil fuels, rising cost of energy and environmental pollution have become the biggest challenge in modern times. With limited resources and quick depletion of fossil fuel resources, the demand and supply situation is getting worse with each passing day.

Pakistan is having a huge market of mobile telephone and an ever increasing exponential growth in the mobile sector. The telecom equipment needed to support the growth of telecom has also increased; so is the use of BTS (Base Transceiver Station) towers. With thousands of BTS installed all over the country, average consumption of electricity of these BTS is moving from huge to humongous.

Currently BTS towers depends on On-Grid power which is provided by WAPDA, however with increasing loads shedding, Telecom companies installs around 10-20KVA of generators on all BTS sites to keep the BTS telecom tower alive during load shedding hours for consumer communication needs.

Currently only Telenor has more than 7000 sites operational all over the country (a Telenor employ who do not want to be named told). The data is also available on PTA site which has not been update in the last 1 or 2 years or so.
Pakistan is facing an average 6-8 hours of load shedding each day. Each of the BTS station takes an average of around 3-4kWh of total load.
A total of minimum 21 MW of electricity is being consumed by only one telecom operator per Hour. This means 378MW of electricity is being consumed each day by one Telecom operator (assuming 18hours of electricity being used from Grid).
This is just one side of the electricity consumption,  Diesel generator used as a backup for BTS towers runs an average of around 4-6 hours each day, they not only put burden on financial exchequer of the government but, also responsible for noise and air pollution in terms of carbon foot print.
If only 30% of this electricity consumption of grid (WAPDA) can be saved by installing renewable energy sources like Solar or wind, Pakistan can save around 110MW/day of electricity just from one telecom operator. Around 500MW of electricity per day can be saved just by converting 30% of the already use grid electricity of all telecom operators’ BTS tower towards Solar renewable energy system.
Pakistan, being close to equator, is exposed to enormous sunshine for maximum part of the year. Hence solar energy is available in abundance in most part of the country. A study by USAID reveals the fact that the average solar radiation in different part of the country is significant enough to generate almost 3 to 6 KW of energy per sq.m. / Hour.

Converting BTS towers to renewable energy is a win-win situation even for the Telecom companies. The payback period of solar renewable energy is mere 13-15 years when compared with On-Grid electricity (WAPDA), and after that this energy is totally free. Even a 12th grade student can calculate the revenues of what telecom companies can really benefit from solar energy sources.

Government should play a vital to encourage the telecom companies towards renewable energies by giving some subsidy in terms to taxes or some other incentive, just like other developed countries.  Once under government support, solar energy would attract foreign and local investment, resulting in large network of local industries, suppliers and vendors.  More job opportunities will be created as a result of increased investment in solar industry reducing un-employment.

Note: All calculations are research is done by the author himself, and there might be a slight difference with the original result.

Digital Measuring Tape - Amazing concept

Measuring non-flat surface would be easy with Touch Tape Measure. This measuring tape concept offers you an easy way to measure any object, This tape is thread-based with a suction cup at its end. Unlike our traditional tape measures, we can’t get accurate measurement of non-flat surfaces,
The measuring tape has a digital OLED display, which can give you accurate digital reading. The idea is indeed very nice specially when measurement are to be taken for uneasy surfaces.

Flame virus - US/Israel trying hard to stop Iran with another Cyber-nuclear warfare

If you have read the previous article on my blog Stuxnet - A cyber Nuclear Weapon, you will have some idea as to how future wars will take the shape of Computer viruses from Missiles and other warheads including nuclear bombs.

This Virus, known as Flame virus is actually a malware. To explain how FLAME works, i will have to explain you the basics of SCADA and how Motors are controlled in the industry.

Understanding SCADA:
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, which means you can control each and every part of the industry; be that a Motor, Pump, Robot, Fan , Fire and Gas systems, Water controlling and/or other machinery with just a switch of a button from your PC.

SCADA
All industries basically consist of motors, controllers and pumps e.t.c. For example in a packaging industry, there will be a conveyor belt to transport any item from one place to another, that conveyor belt will be run by motors, so these motors (may be 1000 of them) are not easy to be controlled individually. So scientist have developed a system to control and supervise the whole system via their PC. The PC gives them the detail of each and everything from what is the current speed of the motors to the health of each motor and tells the supervisor if any motor is malfunctioning or not. All of these operations are done by SCADA. SCADA is that piece of Software that is installed on the PC for the supervisors. Just like a spell checker of MS word. which instantly tells us if we write any  misspelled word on the word document.

Understanding Flame/Stuxnet attack:
Now let's become an evil genius for a moment and brainstorm to find a way to make the above conveyor belt system crash. There are many possibilities. e.g. destroying the motors of the conveyor belts with hammer, or  breaking the power supply cables of the motors which will inadequately makes the motor stop. But there is a catch in the above two scenarios. As explained earlier, each and every detail about the system is being monitored via SCADA, so as soon as the motor will be broken or the power supply cables will be disconnected, SCADA software will inform the supervisor who is monitoring the system over his PC. and he will immediately stop the system or ring the alarm for that event.
What else? Think about any other idea where you have to stop the motor and at the same time you do not want the supervisor to know that the damage has been done. What if such a virus/malware is created for that SCADA system which will give false report of the system even when the system is broken, e.g. telling the supervisor that every thing is working correctly even when the motor is completely destroyed.  Good idea? isn't it?

That's what Stuxnet and Flame virus/malware is all about. It will trigger wrong alarm even when all the machinery is working fine or when there is a damage. and not only that it can even get all the information of the system which could be top secret for a country and sends it to the creators of the virus.

The same happened with Iranian's nuclear facility as it collapsed due to Stuxnet/Flame. When the Iranian's came to know about it the damage was already done and they had to halt their nuclear enrichment facility.

Countries affected by flame virus(click to enlarge)
Infected Areas:The infamous Flame virus can infect even secure PCs by tricking them into believing its malicious payload is actually an update from Microsoft. It can get all the information about the system,e.g. passwords, screenshots, record the sound and even access wireless communication of blue-tooth and Internet.

Flame was first detected by Kaspersky Lab, a Russian-based computer security firm, in May. Analysis by the Kaspersky’s analysts revealed that the virus might have been several years old. Experts believed that the complexity of the virus code indicates that it may have only been produced by a government or military.
Earlier, the New York Times reported that the US and Israel were behind Stuxnet, which caused physical damage to an Iranian nuclear facility, but Israel denied being involved with Flame earlier this month.

With the production of such virus being sponsored now by governments, no wonder this new kind of cyber nuclear battle has been started. Now the point is that we are waiting as to when we will hear an explosion similar to Chernobyl.

Cyber security agencies are still trying hard to decode the virus, you can get the latest update about this virus by clicking here

Removing the virus

To confirm if your computer is infected by  this dangerous Flame virus, feel free to download BitDefender Flame Removal Tool here:
as per the  latest update, Israeli based security company Seculert and Russia’s Kaspersky Lab, said on Tuesday that they identified more than 800 victims of the operation. The targets include critical infrastructure companies, engineering students, financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran.
The Mahdi Trojan lets remote attackers steal files from infected PCs and monitor emails and instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers..

11 Weapons that only 'America' possess

America has always tried to supersede all other countries when it comes to developing intelligent and lethal weapons. Some of weapons are a wonder of new technological advancements. The Soviets exploded their first nuclear weapon in 1949. China revealed plans for its own stealth bomber last year.
But there are still some weapons the rest of the world doesn't have.

Weapons like the MQ9 Reaper Drone, the Laser Avenger and the ADAPTIV cloaking give U.S. troops the advantage on any battlefield around the world. Some of these weapons have been around for several years but were recently modified, and some are still in production.

MQ9 Reaper Drone

Manufactured by: General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI)
Release date: 2001

The Reaper has been around for over 10 years, but was used largely for intelligence and reconnaissance until recently.
Today, squadrons of F-16's are being transitioned into fully unmanned drone fleets.

The Reaper is the largest of the UAV's in the U.S. arsenal with a wingspan of 84 feet, a takeoff weight of 7,000 pounds, a payload capacity of 3,000 pounds and a flight time of 36 hours.
The drone climbs up to 52,000 feet, and reads a license plate from over two miles away. Capable of carrying 500 pound bombs, air-to-ground, and air-to-air missiles the UAV fleet is poised to perform the lion's share of American air support.
As of March 2011 the Air Force has more personnel training to operate its burgeoning drone fleet than for any other weapon system in its arsenal.

AA12 Atchisson Assault Shotgun

Manufactured by: Maxwell Atchisson
Release date: 2005

The AA12 can fire five 12-gauge shells per second and because the recoil is engineered at just 10 percent a normal shotgun, it can be fired from the hip with only one hand.
The Atchisson also fires a high explosive or fragmentation grenade called a FRAG-12 round to 175 meters with equal efficiency.
Designed for long-term combat use, tests have shown the AA12 can fire up to 9,000 rounds without being cleaned or jamming.
All the user needs to do is hold the trigger down for four seconds to empty the 20 round drum at a target.

ADAPTIV Invisibility cloak makes tanks disappear

Manufactured by: BAE Systems
Release date: 2013

Developed and patented in Sweden. ADAPTIV functions over infra-red and other electronic frequencies. While it can blend the coated vehicle into the background, making it seem to be invisible, it can also shape the returning signal to appear like something else.
A tank, for example, can be made to look like a car. These pictures show both the combat vehicle disappearing and reshaping itself into the outline of an automobile.

PHASR Rifle

Manufactured by: the Department of Defense (DOD)
Release date: 2007

The Personnel Halting and Stimulation Response (PHASR) rifle is a handheld laser array, called a dazzler, capable of blinding and disorienting anyone caught in its sights.

While weapons to cause blindness were sagely restricted by the 1995 United Nations Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons (a ruling the U.S. didn't agree to until 2009) the PHASR causes only temporary blindness, thus escaping the ban.
Dazzlers were originally mounted devices to U.S. soldiers rifles as a non-lethal way to halt Iraqis who failed to stop at checkpoints.
The PHASR uses a green laser array to calculate its targets distance and ensure its non-blinding intensity.

The Taser Shockwave

Manufactured by: TASER
Release date: 2008

The Taser model will electrocute a crowd of people at the touch of a button.
Creating an "area of denial" the Taser can be stacked up and strung together almost indefinitely. It will also mount to any vehicle.
The Shock wave has an effective distance of 25 feet.

The Black Knight

Manufactured by: BAE Systems (BA.L)
Release date: 2008

The Black Knight is a combination remote controlled tank and forward scouting vehicle, designed for situations too risky for manned vehicles.
To keep costs low, the Black Knight shares a weapons systems and engine parts with the manned Bradley Fighting vehicle. Including a 30mm cannon, machine gun and 300 horsepower engine.
The vehicle is also fitted with autonomous navigation software and can design and follow its own routes without input from an outside source.

The Active Denial System

Manufactured by: Raytheon (RTN)
Release date: 2008

Dubbed America's Ray Gun, the Active Denial System is really more a combination radar array and microwave.

The ADS shoots a stream of electromagnetic waves, shorter than microwaves, which are instantly absorbed by the top layer of skin.
The pain is so intense, the reaction to run from the beams so overpowering, the military calls it the "Goodbye Weapon."
The ADS has been used domestically, both on test subjects and prison inmates. It was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, only to be recalled, inexplicably, months later.
The military claims there are no lingering effects from exposure.

The Laser Avenger

Manufactured by: Boeing (BA)
Release date: 2009

Only a few centimeters in diameter and invisible to the naked eye, the Avenger's laser is 20 times hotter than an electric stove top and will cut through artillery shells with ease.
The Avenger was designed with the hope of effectively detonating the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that inflict more damage on American forces than any other weapon.
Current disposal methods involve a version of the MAARS robot that insurgents will bomb to take out of action.
The Avenger is also being tested to take down aerial vehicles.

MAARS Robot (Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System)

Manufactured by: QinetiQ - QQ
Release date: 2009

The MAARS Robot is a modified remote control, bomb disposal robot.
Customizable to various needs, the MAARS can be configured with either an MB240 machine gun and 40mm grenade launcher, or a loudspeaker and eye dazzling laser, or bean bag guns, smoke, and pepper spray.
To date, no shots have been fired in combat by a remote device like the MAARS.

XM2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle

Manufactured by: Remington
Release date: 2010-2011

The product of a long string of modifications to the 22 year-old M24 sniper rifle, the XM2010 is designed specifically to be effective in the high altitude long distance fighting in Afghanistan.
To provide quiet, pinpoint accuracy at up to 1200 meters the XM2010 carries more gun powder in the bullets it fires, has a flash suppressor, sound suppressor, and a thermal sleeve to hide the warm barrel from FLIR.
When U.S. Snipers graduate from the five-week school at Fort Benning, Ga. they are capable of hitting a man-sized target nine out of ten times at 600 meters — over a third of a mile away.

XM25 Individual Airburst Weapon System (IAWS)

Manufactured by: Heckler & Koch
Release date: 2014

Dubbed "The Punisher" by American forces in Afghanistan, the XM25 accurately shoots a next-generation, 25mm, grenade up to 500 meters.

But, the distance isn't what impressed soldiers involved in the live trial of the weapon — it was the grenade programming.
A targets distance is transmitted by a rangefinder in the XM25 to the grenade in the firing chamber. When the grenade leaves the barrel it is spiraling, like a football, and measures the distance it's traveled by the number of spirals it completes.
The detonation can be manually programmed within 10 meters to hit enemy in bunkers or behind barriers.

World's Internet will Shut Down on July 9

Yes this is no Joke. FBI issued a warning of a trojan that has infected millions of computers around the world.

Hackers have created a Trojan/virus, which will install itself on the computer and stays there just like until July 9. The Trojan virus is set to time bombed itself on July 9th. Thus Trojan will deflect all the Internet traffic to hacker's infected servers whereby blocking the access of the Internet.

Click here to see the location of the machines that will be most effected on July 9.

How July 9 Trojan Virus Works:

There's a reason why those machines will have difficulty accessing sites on the Internet. DNS, or Domain Name Services, is what gives Internet users access to websites by simply typing the name - like yahoo.com - instead of an IP address. DNS translates the name of the website to the actual IP address where the site lives. For most users, these requests are handled by servers at their ISP, or Internet Service Provider.
The DNS Changer malware, however, will redirect those queries to a server set up by the trojan’s creators, effectively hijacking all Internet traffic from the computer. This let the criminals send users to websites filled with ads allowing them to pocket millions of dollars from the traffic.

How to Check if Your Computer is Affected on July 9:

If the computer is clean, the page will present a 'Green' graphic indicating the computer appears to be routing addresses correctly.
If a 'Red' graphic is displayed, that means the computer is infected.

How to Remove the Trojan/Virus

Go to  DNS Changer Working Group website and use any one of the links there to clean the malware off the computer.
With great technology comes great threats.

Nuclear Weapons

Nuclear Weapons

A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission and fusion. Both reactions release vast quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter. The first fission ("atomic") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 20,000 tons of TNT. The first thermonuclear ("hydrogen") bomb test released the same amount of energy as approximately 10,000,000 tons of TNT.[1] A modern thermonuclear weapon weighing little more than 2,400 pounds (1,100 kg) can produce an explosive force comparable to the detonation of more than 1.2 million tons (1.1 million tonnes) of TNT.[2] Thus, even a small nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire and radiation. Nuclear weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction, and their use and control have been a major focus of international relations policy since their debut. The technology of producing nuclear bombs have significantly improved after the first nuclear tests.
